Innerspace
Space is almost always at a premium in utility rooms. Even a folding ironing board has to be stored when it's not in use, which is one reason why ironing is often done elsewhere in the house. But new and improved ironing board designs are changing all that. Here are a few of the ironing board styles you might choose to install in your utility room.
Recessed ironing cabinet
This ironing board design has been around for years, but its ease and efficient use of space have kept it popular. Installing a recessed ironing cabinet is a reasonably simple do-it-yourself job. The main things to keep in mind are to locate your ironing board cabinet near an electrical outlet, and make sure that you use a stud finder so the cabinet can be installed between two adjacent wall studs.
The advantage of a recessed ironing board cabinet is that when it's not in use, it doesn't even project out from the wall. It's there when you need it, and completely out of the way when you don't.
Pull-down ironing board
A pull-down ironing board is conceptually similar to an ironing board cabinet but uses a much simpler design. A pull down or built-in ironing board can be attached to a wall or the back of your laundry room door for easy access. Unlike an ironing cabinet, a pull down ironing board will be visible when it's not in use.
Utility room ironing center
An ironing center is a modern twist on the recessed ironing cabinet. Rather than a simple drop down ironing table, a fold away ironing center features a swivel base under the ironing board so that ironing can be done in positions other than a 90-degree angle. The ironing table also extends out slightly from the base, so you can do your ironing without banging your elbow against the wall.
