What is a utility sink?
Utility sinks, sometimes referred to as laundry sinks or laundry tubs, are distinguished from regular sinks primarily by their size. Counter top utility sinks are wider and deeper than kitchen sinks. Modular utility sinks or laundry tubs are floor-standing models. These stand-alone utility sinks provide convenient access for heavy duty washing jobs, and often include useful features such as adjustable legs or double basins.
Laundry sinks usually come with additional accessories such as washboards, wire racks, and soaking pans. A backsplash can also be a feature of utility sink design. Utility sinks are usually made from stainless steel, though cheaper utility sinks are made from polypropylene and other materials.
Under counter vs. self rimming
Counter top utility sinks are divided into two categories: under counter and self-rimming. Under counter utility sinks are mounted from under the counter, while self-rimming utility sinks are placed on top of the counter.
Self-rimming designs are generally preferred to under counter models, because their wide rims rest over the counter and won't separate over time. If you have a granite or marble counter in your utility room, an under counter sink can be installed. Self rimming laundry sinks are best with Formica counters.
